Obituary

Romani Kylie Briggs, affectionately known as “Pumpkin,” was born on June 26, 2016, to Lakeisha Nelson in Columbia, South Carolina. Romani was a bright and beautiful soul who brought joy, laughter, and love to everyone she encountered. She transitioned from this life on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the age of nine.

Romani was known for her sassy personality and expressive spirit. She loved spending quality time with her siblings and being surrounded by family. Romani enjoyed being pampered—especially getting her hair done, having manicures and pedicures, and feeling her very best. She had a special love for butterflies, found joy in watching her favorite show Spirit, and never tired of watching her favorite movie, Sister Act.

One cherished family memory was a trip to Orlando, Florida, where Romani especially loved being at the beach and spending time in the pool. Those moments of laughter and happiness will forever live in the hearts of her family.

Romani shared a special bond with her in-home nurses, Mara and Perla, who cared for her with compassion, patience, and love. She enjoyed being read to by them, listening to old-school music, and being lovingly sung to during their time together. The nurses also made sure Romani’s bow barrettes always matched her outfits, adding extra joy and sparkle to her days. These thoughtful moments brought her comfort, happiness, and a sense of being truly cherished.

Romani attended the Washington Center from first through third grade while living in Greenville County, where she was taught by Ms. Jean, who brought out Romani’s personality and celebrated her unique spirit by awarding her a Citizenship Award. Romani was homebound for both schools and was supported by Ms. Bright of McCarthy Tezler School, who enjoyed reading to Romani and shared that she was always very engaged and attentive during story time. Through this personalized learning environment, Romani continued to grow while surrounded by care, patience, and encouragement.

Romani leaves to cherish her memory of her siblings: Keyshawn Briggs, Ketrell Briggs-Nelson, Joel Briggs-Nelson, and Jamya Briggs-Nelson; her stepfather, Freddie Sexton; her grandfather, Romey Coard; and her beloved nephews, OBJ Health III and Kason Briggs, along with a host of family members, caregivers, and friends who loved her deeply.

She was preceded in death by, grandmother Brendal Belser.

Though her time with us was far too short, Romani’s light, personality, and love will live on forever. She will always be remembered as our beautiful Pumpkin—sweet, strong, and unforgettable.
